Magnetic field evolution and reconnection in low resistivity plasmas

چکیده
The mathematics and physics of each the three aspects magnetic field evolution—topology, energy, helicity—are remarkably simple clear. When resistivity η is small compared to an imposed evolution, a/v, timescale, which means Rm≡μ0va/η≫1, field-line chaos dominates evolution topology in three-dimensional systems. Chaos has no direct role dissipation energy. A large current density, jη≡vB/η, required for energy be on a comparable timescale topological evolution. Nevertheless, plus Alfvén wave damping explain why both timescales tend approximately order magnitude longer than a/v. Magnetic helicity injected onto tubes lines when boundary flows have vorticity. can spread but not destroy helicity. Resistivity negligible effect accumulation Rm≫1. Helicity accumulates within tube until erupts moves far from its original location.

Chaos-induced resistivity in collisionless magnetic reconnection.
Magnetic null points act as scattering centers where particles describe chaotic orbits and the mixing effect increases the kinetic entropy. In an open system where convection of particles into/from the chaos region exists, the saturation of the entropy can be avoided, and continuous dissipation is achieved. The chaos-induced collisionless resistivity of ions enables fast magnetic reconnection. ...
متن کاملMagnetic Reconnection in Astrophysical and Laboratory Plasmas
Magnetic reconnection is a topological rearrangement of magnetic field that converts magnetic energy to plasma energy. Astrophysical flares, from the Earth’s magnetosphere to γ -ray bursts and sawtooth crashes in laboratory plasmas, may all be powered by reconnection. Reconnection is essential for dynamos and the large-scale restructuring known as magnetic self-organization. We review reconnect...

It requires the violation...
متن کاملTheory of magnetic reconnection in solar and astrophysical plasmas.
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in a plasma that facilitates the release of energy stored in the magnetic field by permitting a change in the magnetic topology. In this paper, we present a review of the current state of understanding of magnetic reconnection. We discuss theoretical results regarding the formation of current sheets in complex three-dimensional magnetic fields and ...
متن کاملChaos-induced resistivity of collisionless magnetic reconnection in the presence of a guide field
It is one of the most puzzling problems in astrophysics to understand the anomalous resistivity in collisionless magnetic reconnection that is believed extensively to be responsible for the energy release in various eruptive phenomena. The magnetic null point in the reconnect current sheet, acting as a scattering center, can lead to chaotic motions of particles in the current sheet, which is on...
